Avadh University, Faizabad was initially established as an affiliating University by the Government of Uttar Pradesh releasing a notification of No. 1192/fifteen-10-46(6)-1975 dated March 4th 1975. That time, Professor (Dr.) Surendra Singh was appointed as the first Vice Chancellor of the University. Later in 1993-94, it was renamed as Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Avadh University, Faizabad in the memory of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia who was an epic socialist leader and freedom fighter.
